About Ferris

Historic downtown Ferris, Texas, known for its small-town charm.

Ferris, Texas is a welcoming small city of approximately 4,000 residents nestled in northern Ellis County, just about 20 miles south of downtown Dallas. Our town offers the best of both worlds – you’ll find historic charm and a friendly small-town feel, yet Ferris is close enough to the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex to enjoy modern conveniences and big-city opportunities. Many proud locals call Ferris home, and it’s easy to see why: we have a close-knit community, a rich heritage, and a “hidden gem” quality in the DFW region that visitors quickly fall in love with.

Ferris has a rich history dating back to the 1870s. The town was officially established along a rail line in 1874 and incorporated in 1882. In the mid-20th century, Ferris earned fame as the “Brick Capital of the Nation,” nicknamed “The City that Bricked the World,” thanks to the many brick factories that once operated here. Our heritage is still celebrated today. Each spring we host the Ferris Brick Festival, a lively event honoring the industry that put our town on the map. Throughout the year, Ferris maintains its small-town traditions with events like Trade Days markets and holiday celebrations on our downtown square, bringing friends and neighbors together.

Today, Ferris is growing fast while keeping its historic charm and tight-knit spirit. The community is wonderfully diverse and family-friendly, boasting an award-winning school district and a variety of local shops and eateries. Stroll down Main Street and you’ll see a mix of old brick storefronts and new businesses side by side. Enjoy a round of golf at The Old Brickyard Golf Course (voted the best course in Ellis County) or grab a bite at a home-style diner – you’ll experience the genuine hospitality that defines Ferris. In Ferris, neighbors know each other, local businesses are part of the family, and newcomers are greeted with a smile. We invite you to visit Ferris and experience this small-town charm with big-city accessibility for yourself – our community truly is the hidden gem of North Texas.
